What we process and why
Voice recordings
When you practise, Echo records what you say and sends the audio to our scoring server, which passes it to Microsoft Azure Pronunciation Assessment to score each sound. The audio is used only to produce the score and is not stored on our servers. If you turn on "Keep my first and latest recordings on this phone" in Profile, those recordings stay on your iPhone only. When the scoring server can't be reached, Echo uses Apple's on-device speech recognition instead.
Practice results and progress
We store the results of your attempts (the item practised, scores, XP), your streak, gems, quests and league standing, linked to a random app identifier. This lets us keep your progress, run weekly leagues and improve lessons. These records do not contain audio.
Profile and social features
If you choose a username, display name or avatar, they are visible to other learners in leagues and friends lists, along with your weekly XP and streak. Following someone, being followed and cheers are stored so these features work.
Notifications
If you allow notifications, we store your device's push token to send reminders and social alerts (for example a friend cheering you on). You can turn notifications off at any time in iOS Settings or in Profile.
Usage analytics
Echo sends anonymous usage events (such as finishing a lesson or opening a screen) along with app version, language and device type, to help us fix problems and improve the app. Switch off "Share anonymous usage data" in Profile to stop this.
Feedback and support
Messages you send us through the app or by email are used to answer you and improve Echo.
Purchases
Subscriptions are processed by Apple. We receive confirmation of what you're entitled to, but never your payment details.
Advertising
The Free and Plus plans show ads served by Google AdMob. Google may process device identifiers and usage information to show and measure ads, according to Google's advertising policies and your iOS tracking settings. Pro and Family subscribers don't see ads.
Service providers
- Microsoft Azure — pronunciation scoring and model voices.
- Apple — App Store purchases, push notification delivery and on-device speech recognition.
- Google AdMob — ads on the Free and Plus plans.
- Our hosting provider, which runs the Echo servers.
They process data only to provide their service to us.
How long we keep data
Practice results and profile data are kept while your account is in use. Analytics events are kept only as long as they're useful for improving the app. When you ask us to delete your data, we remove it from our active systems.
Your choices and rights
- Turn off anonymous analytics, notifications or on-device recordings in Profile.
- Don't set a username if you'd rather not appear in leagues and friends lists.
- Ask us for a copy of your data, a correction or deletion by emailing support@debugsy.com with your Echo username.
Depending on where you live (for example in the EU, UK or California), you may have additional rights under local law. We'll honour them.
Children
Echo is a general-audience learning app. Younger learners should use it with a parent or guardian, for example through the Family plan, and in line with the age rules of their country.
Security
Data is sent to our servers over encrypted connections. Access to our systems is limited to the people who need it to run Echo.

If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top of this page and, for significant changes, let you know in the app.
